What a great source of memories, navigational and possibly not strictly, this site is!

My thanks to Douglas and Apacherunner for your recall and my apologies to others for carrying on a non navigational conversation! As a war time schoolboy I spent a lot of time in West Sussex having been ‘bombed out’ in Portsmouth twice, we lived at Felpham but moved back in 1947. The churches of West Sussex were always magical, like Bosham and for 5/- (non metric money!) one could get a weeks Runabout ticket on Southern Railways including ones bicycle. I can still recall that the train at Platform 3 was for Brighton, calling at Fratton,Hilsea Halt, Cosham Bedhampton,Havant, Emsworth Southbourne, Nutbourne,Fishbourne and Chichester, Change at Havant for Hayling Island, Change at Barnham for Bognor, Change at Ford for Littlehampton etc! All that pre Dr Beeching! My parents are buried at Felpham Church which also has nice mass dials and, to be honest, I never noticed the 8 ‘tide’ divisions, its taken some 60 years to learn that! The description of Harold II’s demise certainly links his last resting place to Bosham as against the arrow in the eye story (did not Stanley Holloway have a ditty thereon?)

Re Canute, I was plotting the cyclonic storm surge limits for Darwin on a map some years ago and a somewhat senior politician told me to move the primary surge line back 100 metres to exclude two desirable blocks of land that he owned, I asked if he had ever heard of King Canute- he had not, I did not adjust the mapping!!

    Enough!

    Cheers
