There's a letter to the editor in the Jan/Feb Ocean Navigator magazine (p. 37) by a gentleman named Alex Abbott on this subject. He agrees with you - the only time "the" is used is when there's a modifying word or phrase before the name (e.g., "the schooner Bluenose," but otherwise simply "Bluenose").

    So there's another vote.

    Regards,

I would like to throw out a question for the nautical minded masters out there.

I am having a "discussion" regarding the naming convention for ships. I contend that a ship's name is never preceded by "the".  In otherwords, Nova Scotia's famous schooner "Bluenose" would not be referred to as "the Bluenose" but simply "Bluenose"

    Comments anyone?
