The Navy does recommend using software, however some of us do not allow our junior personnel to use the computer until they prove they know how to do it by hand. The 2005 edition has been onboard the ships since April. -----Original Message----- From: Navigation Mailing List [mailto:NAVIGATION-L@LISTSERV.WEBKAHUNA.COM] On Behalf Of Fred Hebard Sent: Friday, October 22, 2004 17:18 To: NAVIGATION-L@LISTSERV.WEBKAHUNA.COM Subject: Re: Nautical Almanac Usage This is probably the explanation! More seriously, I believe the Navy advises using software to reduce sights, although one would wonder why distribute them to the Navy at all if they can't get them out in a timely manner. I expect they can get them out to the ships in a timely manner. It does illustrate that with celestial, in the absence of computerized ephemerides, we are as dependent upon the government as with GPS, although not perhaps as vulnerable to physical neutralization of the satellites.
