This practice is no longer followed in the US Navy. The only log that requires a distance run every 24 hours is the engineering log and they want the distance (actual distance steamed, not distance made good) from midnight to midnight. When I was doing my navigating, and by training, it was and likely still is the convention of most all mariner's to calculate their "Day's Run" from "Noon to Noon".
