Thanks Gary and Frank, very useful links. Calibration down to one degree sounds good enough to me for navigational purposes (plenty gyro compasses do not achieve this, you will need a fibre-optic one for better results). The Shetland Islands (due west from Bergen) were frequented by the Vikings in the past, which takes two days sailing. I always wondered how they managed to sail due west for two days to get there. The Sun-Stone can very well explain how they did this.
