Hey, we gotta stop with these sea stories. Pretty soon one will come up with one about an American fishing schooner trying to navigate the Med with maps from the back of a bible! :-P

Seventy to eighty years ago, coal burning Hull and Grimsby (UK) steam trawlers, en route to and from the Iceland and Greenland fishing grounds would take a cast of the deep sea lead.
