    I used to live in upstate NY. My cottage backed up to some woods. I literally got lost in my own backyard one afternoon. It can happen awful fast, even if you have a good sense of direction.

    She had a poor sense of direction but, after 1000 miles, insisted on continuing when her hiking buddy had to leave. She apparently didn't panic but, as has been mentioned, she was close enough to the AT for someone to hear a whistle.
