Have you read Kaplan's "navigation solution" paper at the USNO site? http://aa.usno.navy.mil/research/celnav.html ... His algorithm may give an error estimate. I can't remember. It's used in the Navy's STELLA software, which unfortunately is not available to civilians. If you could create an open-source implementation of Kaplan's algorithm, that would be some accomplishment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have programmed the Kaplan algorithm (1), in two versions, one with the rhumb line equations for the oblate Earth on his articles, and another simplified with mid-latitude formulas derived by my own. For Least squares I use a commercial package: LabWindows/CVI by National Instruments. The algorithm calculate the observer's position (Lat, Lon), the SOG and the COG, for more than 8 observations. The STELLA software uses the input of a star tracker to automate the process. I have now the implementation of the algorithm running in a command line program, and in a not very remote future, I want to do a MMI, (man machine interface) available in my web. I promise to write an article explaining the algorithm and containing the source code in C/C++. (before 3 months??)
