I agree that it would be better, and I *am* working on it, George, but such a simple thing entails a bunch of other changes. I try to make changes slowly and incrementally. Unfortunately, the service we are using right now for distribution of individual messages by email does not have automatic numbering as a visible property. And just to reiterate, message numbers are available as they have been for years via the web site, and they are also available in the digest emails.

While you're waiting, there are OTHER ways to get the message numbers. You can receive a separate very short email containing each message's number, subject, author, and size. This short email distributes slightly before each email copy of the full messages. You can also receive a daily message summary which includes each of these short messages in a bundle for each day. Think of it as a table of contents. Finally, there is a very quick way to access any message by the number on the web site. Take this address http://fer3.com/x.aspx/ and follow it with the message number. So if you need to have a quick look at message number 12103, visit fer3.com/x.aspx/12103.
