Re: Navy And Merchant Marine Sextant Sightings Requirements ?

The checking of gyro error is still an important part of the watch
officers days work and requires the use of chronometer, almanac,
tables, or celestial navigation calculator. I suspect that there will
soon be an affordable GPS compass to replace the gyro. It is always
prudent for mariners to maintain celestial navigation proficiency just
    in case lightning strikes.

CFR regulations require inspected commercial U.S. flag vessels
crossing oceans to carry a sextant as well as addressing minimum
navigation equipment requirements. U.S.C.G. merchant marine unlimited
ton license exams for masters and mates covers all aspects of
    celestial navigation.
