Hi John, welcome to the list. This should be right down your alley with the mathmatical discussions. There are also a number of real and created celestial problems that you and/or your students can play with. I read "The Last Navigator" by Stephen D. Thomas which is about his efforts to learn from one of the last Polynesian navigators still using the old methods. Given the age of the book, I wouldn't be suprised if he is gone now, or at least not taking to sea any longer. It is a good read in any case.
