My thanks to all those who replied to my question "How flat do sextant mirrors need to be?" The answer seems to be that they should be flat to within a wavelength of light. When restoring sextants, I sometimes resilver the mirrors of antique ones, but with more recent instruments, I make new mirrors out of modern float mirrors glass, as it seems to be of adequate flatness. For those who wish to follow suit and finish their mirrors properly, I have posted an illustrated instructional blog at www.sextantbook.com.
