    New sextant mirrors for old
    From: Bill Morris
    Date: 2009 Feb 11, 14:28 -0800

My thanks to all those who replied to my question "How flat do sextant mirrors
need to be?" The answer seems to be that they should be flat to within a
wavelength of light. When restoring sextants, I sometimes resilver the
mirrors of antique ones, but with more recent instruments, I make new mirrors
out of modern float mirrors glass, as it seems to be of adequate flatness.
For those who wish to follow suit and finish their mirrors properly, I have
posted an illustrated instructional blog at www.sextantbook.com.
