From another newbie: I have not tried a dedicated device like Celesticomp, but I use Pocket Stars (laptop and iPaq) and CelestNav (Palm). Very handy for verifying my work and checking how reductions are done. I've programmed many of the usual nav formulae into PowerOne Graph, which is a programmable calculator for Palm handheld computers (dips, distance to horizon, great circle sailings, etc). I use Planetarium on my Palm for star maps and for checking celestial body positions to learn the stars and plan sights, and Starry Night on the desktop computer and Pocket Stars on the iPaq for their almanac information on those platforms.
