Either the 'complicated GPS "system"aboard' is the primary system or the sextant is.
I would have thought the primary system remains dead reckoning, Fred. Starting from a known point and plotting movement across the chart, according to speed, direction and time. Corrected and tested along the way with whatever other position-indicating methods are available:
