George, your comments about GPS simply hit me the right way this morning. Perhaps if we (well, US taxpayers at least) were to suggest to our DoD that they make the GPS satellites larger and shinier, or tether large reflectors to them, then we could use the GPS satellites themselves as heavenly bodies that moved at great speed, presenting the opportunity to take sights directly off the GPS satellites, allowing them to be used for manual celestial navigation! Sounds like a classic raison d'etre for a new goverment program, to launch a new generation of satellites that would have "optical fialure mode redundancy support" added to them.
