Non-electronic use of GPS! [was] Taffrail log and an alternative

George, your comments about GPS simply hit me the right way this morning.

Perhaps if we (well, US taxpayers at least) were to suggest to our DoD that
they make the GPS satellites larger and shinier, or tether large reflectors
to them, then we could use the GPS satellites themselves as heavenly bodies
that moved at great speed, presenting the opportunity to take sights directly
off the GPS satellites, allowing them to be used for manual celestial
    navigation!

Sounds like a classic raison d'etre for a new goverment program, to launch a
new generation of satellites that would have "optical fialure mode redundancy
    support" added to them.
