Dear George, Thank you very much for your explanation and for clearing the confusion. I did not know Bougainville's logbook is available, even in English. The Russian translation I have is apparently not from the logbook, but from the abridged version of it published as a book after the voyage (I site the publication data in my message, the whole book is 265 pages, this cannot be the whole logbook). Your comparison of the Russian and English translations show that many mistakes were introduced in the process of publication of this abridged version, and maybe in the Russian translation as well. Still I am curious, what was the error of his determination of coordinates of Cape Vierges (see my message under the title Lunars in 1766). Alex.
