It remains to understand what angle the observer
was supposed to measure. It is not the Sun altitude with
artificial horizon because the horison shades are removed.
So apparently this is either some horizontal
angle, or an angle between the direction to the Sun
and some direction on the land (a signal from another
vize-heliotrope??)
The additional mirror will indicate to a distant observer
not only the position of the first observer but also
the inclination of the index of the first observer.
Anyway, I have no clear
understanding of the whose scheme yet.

Will try to find in the Gauss Werke.
