Re submerged night shots:
An acquaintance of mine, long retired from the U.S. Navy as I believe a Commander, was a sub driver, diesel boats.
Once, when I asked him about shooting fixes while submerged, he stated the following.
His boat had, attached to one periscope, a sextant rigged on some sort of a hinge, so that it swung out of the way, when not needed, allowing the periscope to be used.
From periscope depth, he told me that they could shoot 3 stars, visibility allowing, and be gone to deeper waters in a couple of minutes, possibly less, he stated. I don’t know if his boat had a snorkel, he never mentioned one.
