    Alex,
Your post "Lunar observations and other things" was intersting to me because
of your explaination of a point of the background history. That was
    interesting.
There is a tendancy for topics and discussions of navigation on this list to
lean very heavily towards western procedure/thought/practices.There is a
whole other world of navigation out there that is rarely, if ever discussed
on this list. The navigation methods of the Polonesians,Inuits and others are
just as interesting but receive no in depth discussion. Not that there is
anything totally wrong with that as that is what the majority wishes.
As for your comments of SU possessions and/or polar navigation you stated
you picked up a copy of a western encyclopedia and there was no mention of
Soviet endevores in this arena. Are you really suprised at this in the least?
Most of that kind of information was classified by the Soviet government and
kept tightly under their thumbs. It wasn't untill all that long ago that
common maps were unclassified and use allowed the common citizens. That
system liked to take/gather information but didn't like sharing any
    especially with the west.
As for the eclipse tomorrow, out here on the west coast(weather permitting)I
will barely be able to view the start of the event. The body has to be 10*
above the horizon before I even start to see it.The entire event will last
quite awhile and hopefully I'll get to view as much as I like.Moon rise out
here will be about 1800 hrs zt.Meridian Passege is around 0030 hrs zt on the
    28th.
