".PDF" vs. ".JPG" , ".JPEG" and other electronic formats

    Hello to all,

Slightly off topic but not that much after all.

I have observed that a significant proportion of NavList "Attached files" are Scanned Documents.

Quite often, these Documents are published under the ".jpg" , or ".jpeg" format (such as the recent ".jpg" ones published by Greg in his very very interesting posts on USCG Sample Problems.)

May I suggest that the ".pdf" format - to the best of my own experience - seems to have definite advantages over the other formats :

    - It is widely used and recognized,
    - It takes up less file space for a similar printed result, and
    - Pictures edges are more clearly visible and defined while the risk of undersizing/oversizing a print on paper is greatly reduced, and
    - Printing takes up (much) less time, and accordingly (probably) less ink.

I addressing this topic since it would seem that on different printer brands (at least on the EPSON and HP Printers/Scanners I am using), there is an option to save the scanned files under different electronic formats (".jpg", ".jpeg" ...) AND ... ".pdf" .

For all the reasons here-above - and provided such ".pdf" format is part of the saving menu of the printers used by our Members who so nicely publish their works to the full benefit of our NavList Community - I would advocate (a strong) preference to be given to the ".pdf" format over all other electronic formats.

Comments welcome of course, and Thanks to all

    Kermit
