Dear Mr. Koberer,
Thank you for this information. Does any of these sources explain how it actually works?
Thanks
Zvi

Dear Zvi Doron,
not having seen the illustration in "Air Navigation" by Weems I can only
suspect that the Fav? Diagram is the "ingeniously contrived graphical method
for solving spherical triangles" (Cotter) first published by Fav? and Rollet
de l`Lisle in 1892. It is described in Cotter`s "History of Nautical
Astronomy" (p. 338) and in Chap. XXI ("Comparison of Various Methods of
Sight Reduction") of the 1977 edition (Vol. 1) of the "American Practical
Navigator" (p. 601-602).
It is also referred to in the "Lehrbuch der Navigation", Vol. II (Berlin
1906), p. 171, which points out that it has been reissued by H. Maurer in
"Annalen der Hydrographie..." in 1905. According to Bencker "Regimen of the
Sea or Nautical Compendium" the diagram was published under the title
"Abaque pour la d?termination du point ? la mer" in the "Annales
hydrographiques" in 1892 and in the "Revue Maritime" in January 1893.
