They didn't coin it --they're not that clever! They borrowed it. The expression "king tide" has been common in Australia for decades and apparently has crossed the Pacific just recently. This is a natural cultural exchange. California and eastern Australia, after all, are mirror images. Personally I think "king toyd" sounds pretty good with an Australian accent. :)
