I believe that I read this when I purchased the deluxe index mirror for my Astra IIIB. I assumed that it had to do with the fact that the sextant was built for a rear surfaced mirror and that the reflective surface was no longer on the pivoting axis. I'm not sure about the mechanics involved that would require this.
