Re: Pilot avoids collision with Venus

Byron: I think that sea stories are part of training. I could see that happening,
Many years ago (early 60ty) the USS Outpost (Liberty Hull)
was on station between the USA and Cuba. I stood
On the deck above the pilot house to take evening stars.
I turned around and saw an airplane in flames coming
directly at the ship; I quickly reported it to the Bridge,
through the voice tubes, Relative bearing and height.
I then noticed that the flaming
Aircraft did not change in relative bearing or height.
(She was on a collision course) After I looked at my star list and
Knew it was Venus. I did not take her Because the flames
    couldn't be used for SEMIDIAMETER.
I never seem her that large again but I was aware that she could be and
I had seen her disk in the day many times.
