All this prompts me to want to do a "Venus rising" expedition the next time things work out properly. The idea is that it's rather dim when it first rises, due to atmospheric effects, but gets brighter as it gets higher. If a boat with a light on the mast were approaching from the east, I would expect the same effect, as it approaches, the light gets both brighter and higher. Perhaps someone has filmed this even?

Venus is notorious for fooling lookouts at sea. I have to admit that I have on more than one occasion mistaken Venus for the masthead light of a ship. Eyes need not be tired to be tricked here.
