Scott,
On the Davis MK 3 it is best to set the index arm to the round minute of arc and let the body rise or fall to the horizon.
The MK 3 in my collection suffers from a loose index arm which I corrected with a well placed strip of scotch tape on the index arm at the area of contact with the frame. A snug fit is preferable so that the index arm reading is not accidently altered during normal handling.
