Re: A Plath Sextant listed for sale with an odd eye piece

    Paul.
    Thanks for that information.

Yes, you're right the sextant itself looked rather bruised and unloved so you're probably correct in that the same might be expected of the AH.

Oh well. Some times the one's that got away become the most cherished possessions.

Yet, while it is a small flow, the danish trader seems to have a steady, light stream of sextants that are offered. Being an old nautical nation, I guess these are being dusted of and offered for sale. While some do appear in quite decent condition there are some dead-full specimens occasional. So I’ll keep half an eye on future adds to see in another option comes up.

Glen, Honestly, I think you lucked out by missing the chance to buy it. Looking at the scratches on the sextant and noting the missing eye-cup, I will bet that the bubble was dry and that it would have required more than a bit of fixing up to making it sight-ready.  And even though that version of the Plath sextant was the best-designed one they made, it still would have been a hassle to use.

I am perhaps the least experienced member of this group, but I became an accidental collector and while I love, love, love the old sextants, when it comes to actually taking sights with one, I'll stick with the newer ones.  Your Astras are def the right way to go!

Re AHs, my advice is to keep an eye out for a C&P AH, or one of those neat bubble sextant conversions that Bill Morris used to make.
