A week ago, I wrote: "Uploading files has one drawback: because of the specific web technology I'm using, there's no progress indicator. So if you upload a 2-megabyte file, you simply have to wait for it to finish with no visual indication of how much time is remaining. Also, if you're on a slow connection (slower than 100kbps), it is possible that an upload will time out." I wasn't satisfied with this state of affairs so I learned how to set up a better upload function this week with a nice progress bar and the ability to upload much larger files and also no time out. I also fixed a couple of bugs and cleaned up some code so I'm pretty happy with it right now. Incidentally, if you want to try this all out with some test posts, you may have noticed a check box that's marked "Test only. Message will go to test group, not NavList." The 'test group' is NaLTesting so if you really want to experiment, you should join that on googlegroups. I've spent most of today testing and it seems solid, but ya never know with software until someone else starts banging on it. But don't feel like you have to. Just post away... Here's the details again from last week: "This posting system is something I've been planning for over a year, and I finally set aside a week to write the software to make it happen. Let's suppose you read the list's messages at the archive (fer3.com/arc). Now, starting today, you can easily click "reply" and compose a message right there (as I am right now). You don't have to fire up your email application. Each list member has been assigned a six character "posting code" to confirm your identity. You can get your posting code by clicking on any one of several links in the archive or by following this url directly: http://fer3.com/arc/postcode.aspx. You enter your code, click "Post Message", and your message is sent off to the list exactly like any ordinary list message. If you want, you can attach or link files. When you upload a file, if it's larger than 500k [changed from 100k], it will be pre-selected for "linking". If it's smaller than 500k, it's pre-selected for ordinary attachment as part of the message. You can change the "Link" vs. "Attach" option easily. When an uploaded file is linked, a url is added automatically at the end of the message. I will illustrate this by linking a large file to this message and attaching one small file. In addition, the archive now permits non-member posting. Don't worry: posts from non-members are moderated, and non-members' post cannot have attachments. It may mean a little more work for the managers (myself and Dan Allen), but nothing can reach the group that has not been approved for posting. This may prove to be appealing for people interested in navigation who are intimidated by the prospect of "joining" some community when they merely want to ask a quick question. Posts from non-members will appear to come from the email address NavList[--]aol.com which is the archive's membership. Each non-member post will have the original poster's email, masked, in the message body at the end." -FER --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
