Patrick,
Doing traditional sight reduction while underway on a small craft is going to get even the toughest of salty stomachs. There are a few things to try :
1. Pre-calculate the sights before departure so that all you have to do is compare the sextant reading to the pre- calculated altitude (Hp).
2. Remove the scope and do the best you can at rocking the sextant and splitting the Sun with the horizon.
3. The Sun does pop through cloud cover more often than you think so be ready for any opportunities.
4. Save your sights and do sight reduction while at anchor or back at the dock.
5. Try some horizontal sextant angles and practice plotting using a three armed protractor.
6. Take frequent breaks to looking at the horizon. What ever you do don't go down below and lie down.
