For the CN pre-calculation sea trial (June).
Depart Channel Islands Harbor (12:00) and passing Anacapa Light to starboard (14:00) following the south side of Anacapa to Smugglers Cove at Santa Cruz Island for arrival (16:00). The trip takes 4 hours at 5kts. The first half will be a channel crossing to test CN in rougher conditions. For observations on this leg a sight tube will be used. The second half of the trip will be smooth going in the lee of Anacapa Island. For observations on this leg a 4x40mm scope will be used. A table of Hp's will be done the day before for the 4 hour transit starting at 12:00 and ending at 16:00. 4 minute intervals requires 60 entries which will fit on one side of a piece of paper. Some graphs will be drawn as I go to cover additional 8 minute intervals. It takes only a minute to plot the 2 Hp's and draw the line on graph paper. Doing this underway shouldn't be too challenging. The AP will be a convenient Lat. 34* Lon. 119* 20' ( the halfway mark). A palm PDA with a CN application will be used to calculate the Hp's. A few 8 minute graph intervals will be done the day before starting at the top of the hour and 28 past the hour.
