I use a pocket tape recorder for the same purpose. My only concern is that since it relies on electrons that something might go wrong before I replay the tape and write down the data. Your method has  the same problem.

Use the point and shoot camera or equivalent to record CN observations. See the linked images showing the split time of a stopwatch and the corresponding sextant Hs. The stopwatch was started at 18:17:00 6/24/2011 PDT +7. Add the stopwatch's 23 min. 55 sec. to get PDT time of observation of 18:40:55 6/24/2011 or 1:40:55 UT 6/25/2011. Hs of lower limb Sun is 16* 21.2'. A.P. 34* 10.2' N 119* 13.9" W. Height of eye 7 ft.

Getting sharp close-up images may take a few practice snaps to see what settings work best. I used macro ISO 200 priority auto with a 1/3 underexposed meter bias for clear sky conditions.
