My father swore that without Mixter he would never have passed the navigation part of his US Navy reserve officer training in 1941. I, too, found it very understandable when I was learning, using his old copy (1940). These early editions teach sight reduction using the HO 211 (Ageton) tables, which are included in the book.

I have a 1978 sixth edition, which adds chapters on some more modern sight reduction methods (229 & 249) and info on using LORAN and other electronic systems. As Greg mentioned there is a 1995 edition which adds GPS. You should be able to find either on eBay.

However the fundamentals taught in either the old or new editions still hold, and any edition is a fine introduction to the art.
