Thanks to all who responded to my earlier post about discouragement with helpful suggestions! Leveling the AH is much easier now using the proper technique (Thanks, Bill Morris!).
I got a nice shot of Venus early yesterday evening. Ho = 24 degrees 34.9 minutes at 23:00:22 UTC. When I plotted it with the latitude from a sun shot earlier that day, the fix was just under five miles from the GPS-supplied coordinates. This was my first successful planet shot.
The splatter I mentioned in my previous post is due to my glasses. When I remove my glasses, the image through the telescope is clear.
