Peter; I believe you left out the most important and surprising information. The survey showed the water depth was sufficient for the QE2 to safely pass over the rock! (I don't remenber the actual depth) The real cause of the QE2 smacking the "The Queen's Bottom" was due to incresed SQUAT. This was the result of the captains orders to increase speed, to make up time as you stated. If I remember correctly, this information is courtesy of a PBS documentary on the incident. Tony Cappiello
