Occultations were used at times. But I don't expect they happen very often, not with stars that are bright enough to still be seen on the moon's limb. How could you soften the moon's glare when both bodies were together?
Actually I've never given it any thought, but remember seeing something in Bowditch about them. It may be worth looking into.
