    You suggest, as a replacement for radio time signals: "Atomic watches I guess?"

    It appears that battery driven atomic clocks the size of a watch are available for under 1500 USD, which is less than the equivalent of the cost of a chronometer in 1850 and only 1% of the price of a cheap offshore going yacht. But who needs this on a sailboat? Why is a commercial GPS receiver not good enough?
