George,
The head lamp is a little brighter than the original illumination system on the Mini hand compass so additional filtering of the Princeton Tec light may be needed to get the effect you are looking for. A small Mini Maglight converted to LED that is held with a cupped hand around the light lens will work also. LED conversions are under $10 on line.
