Mariners had to make do with what they had. I hope the list will address
matter of DR vs. EP for AP.

I certainly do more land-based observations than on-the-water.  Not by
choice!  It is interesting to get a feel for best-condition results and
compare them to on-the-water results when available.  Also keeps the sextant
and reduction skills sharp.

While I know the way from my home to my mother's home by heart after 41
years, I always use my GPS so that I know the unit is still functioning and
what accuracy I can expect under varying conditions, as well as being able
to use it without a second thought when spring comes around again.

I would imagine musicians practice alone and with their group for those few
hours on stage.  And their stage isn't moving.  Given that almost any task
on small craft takes double the effort compared to on land, it sure helps to
have the process down pat before you step on board.

Can't argue with that, but the goal is proficiency on the water for
navigational purposes with a sextant, or for the sheer joy and independence
of the process, not staking out a subdivision. 

A famed hockey player, Wayne Gretzky said, "It's not as important to know
where the puck is now as to know where it will be."  I imagine a surveyor is
more interested in how to lay out the ice rink and place the goal net.
Where the puck is or will be is of little interest.
