G'day Mark I assume you have an air bubble cell. Just to check, the left hand side of the instrument should be up and the tubular air chamber horizontal while you tap the bubble control button repeatedly (AN 5851). You could also try swinging the instrument rapidly around at arms length with the LHS facing you I have recently covered refilling the bubble unit and overhauling it in a blog on my website at www.sextantbooks.com Look under "Aircraft sextants."
