George, thank you for your response. I thought all the discussions are frozen before Xmas and New Year. Glad I was wrong. ;> My suggestion regarding two bearings is follows: As soon as you can see the landmark suitable to take bow bearing-take the bearing and record the time. Then use the following formula tan B = tan A / (1-tan A), B=arctanB where A-the first bearing B-the second bearing. In this case, you take your second bearing (which you calculated as angle B) at landmark and record the time. You know the time at A and time at B; you know the speed which means you calculate the distance travelled. And this distance travelled is equal to your distance off from landmark at the moment you took second bearing B.
