I used to compensate compasses by bearings of the sun. What do ship guys use to set the reference gyro?

For those really interested in such things, there is a publication called "Handbook of Magnetic Compass Adjustment" available free for download. It is the updated version of Pub No 226. It goes into great detail in both theory and practice.
