Mike Daly wrote- | There's a new reprint of Rupert T. Gould's "The Marine Chronometer. Its | History and Development" due late this year (December 25, 2007 | supposedly). It can be pre-ordered from the usual online booksellers. | The pre-order prices are somewhat better than that offered by the | Antique Collectors Club (i.e. not list price). ===================== That's really good news. Anyone interested in the history of navigation should have Gould's book. He was the man who got the four Harrison clocks back into working order and ticking once again. His book was written in 1923 and has had many reprints since. It has clear diagrams of all sorts of shapes and sizes of movements. He provides a good account of the longitude problem, and offers a much more sober account of the Shovell business than Sobel does. My own copy is the Holland Press reprint of 1978, which I do not recommend, as it's badly bound, and the pictures are falling out. Mike complains about the price asked for these editions by secondhand book dealers, but it seems to me that's the case for all books dealing with horology, for some reason.
