Im almost halfway through Wolffs The Hard Way Around, which I just got for Christmas. And I agree 100% with Franks excellent book review of it.
Ill just add that, as I recall from my reading Slocums Sailing Alone , old Josh wrote that he hit the Marguesas dead on with just one lunar (as Frank said) after several days without any sights. Knowing what I do about lunar accuracy, reading this made me think that heres a bit a literary license, extreme luck, or outright self promotion - like writing that he set out to sail the world with all his celestial navigation skill, but choosing to take only a cheap clock without a minute hand.
But putting that aside, Slocum was quite a guy, leading one heck of an interesting life. And Wolff presents a great picturing of what it must have been like. Now Im encouraged to read more of Slocums books, plus his son Victors books - now lets not see run on them at Amazon.
