Ok, so not really :). The first Soyuz-2 rocket to be launched outside the former USSR took off today from Kourou in French Guiana. It is nearly identical in overall structure to the very first Russian ICBM, the R-7, which used to be targeted at New York, Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles fifty years ago. It is also nearly identical to the rockets which launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, Yuri Gagarin in 1961, and every other manned space flight ever launched by Russia (or the former USSR). Today's launch placed two Galileo "validation" satellites into orbit. These are the first of Europe's answer to GPS.
