This is very true.  If you have an always on connection, you will use
Google instead of a telephone book to look up a phone number, and you
will glance at Yahoo for news rather than the TV, and you will check
Wikipedia rather than going to a different room to look it up in an
encyclopedia... things really DO change in a major way, and most of
it is a big step forward.

However, to test your reliance on the internet, go through a power
outage or go on an exotic vacation, or go out on your boat for a
while, and you will find yourself turning to your laptop all the time
and then you will realize that you are hooked!

Our newsgroup prides itself on self-sufficiency for navigation.  My
version of self-sufficiency for my computer is to have a lot of data
on my hard drive (backed up as well) so that when the internet goes
out, I still have a lot of information available without the
connection.  I have a good American Heritage Dictionary program, I
have lots of books as ASCII files, and as PDFs, etc.  I have tons of
aerial photos of the US and most of the topographic maps of the
Western US.  I even have all of the text of Wikipedia as a large
compressed XML file that I can grep through!

My personal collection of data is almost 500 GB now, so it only fits
on desktop machines.  The only decent way to back it up is to
external 3.5" fast drives or to other computers over Gigabit Ethernet.
