but why is Guillaume having the problem that he described? It should be possible to aim the sextant at the sun (when set to zero) and to determine the altitude. Because this is how you fry your retina. If you look at the sun with a 4 power scope, it happens immediately. The mariners of old didn't wear eye patches because they poked their eyes out on swords etc. They wore them because constantly taking noon sights, dimmed their vision so much that they wore patches to save what vision they did have left.
