    Re: Sextant infos

this is a Russian Cetus sextant. I have one.
There should be 2 telescopes. One with cross-hairs which also magnifies - I
will have to get mine out to see hat the magnification is... (i'm writing
this from my office). The second eyepiece shows the image the correct way
    around.

I bought mine in canaries just before Atlantic crossing (I already had a
Freiberger on board) for about 150 pounds. They used to be sold by Sewills
(sp ?) in UK for about 400 pounds + in UK about 8 years ago.

It's a very good sextant, fairly heavy allowing it to be easily stabilized
when taking sights from a small boat. I liked the "coloured" shades,
excellent for obtaining a clear image of the sun. The disadvantage is that
mine has a split mirror vs a full mirror on my Freiberger
Throughout the crossing I used both sextants for daily positions shooting,
Sun, Moon and planet sights (not simultaneously). I cannot really say which
I preferred; I like them both.

    Aubrey.
