Good weather is upon us. Like last year, I am scheduling sight-taking opportunities this summer here in southern New England. This is sextant practice for students and also a chance for more experienced navigators and navigation enthusiasts to get together and compare instruments, practical tricks and tools, and of course hang out in the hot Sun and talk about how hot the Sun is.
Sunday June 23, 10:00am - 11:00am at Beavertail Point in Jamestown, RI in the middle of Narragansett Bay. The Sun will be in the east-southeast over a clear horizon. This is a beautiful spot and a great place for a picnic.
Sunday June 30, 12:30pm - 1:30pm at Eastern Point in Groton, CT. Local noon is right in the middle at 12:52 so it's a nice opportunity to practice lat/lon by noon sights, but beware the UV! Bring a hat and sunscreen if you join us for this one.
Directions and other details are available at ReedNavigation.com
I will post updates here on the NavList message boards and also on my web site. Naturally, if the weather looks bad, these gatherings will not happen. I MAY cancel as late as midnight the evening before (I will post about it if necessary) but only if the forecast calls for complete overcast. Otherwise, we take our chances and hope for a gap in the clouds!
