Sextant scope out of collimation

Hi, I routinely take sun and star sights ashore and keep a record of them: usually my LOPs lie within 1-1.5 miles from my GPS position. Last week I took some star sights with my 1940 Plath sextant and found all of them where off by about 5-5.5 miles even if observing conditions were definitely ideal. While looking at my sextant with more attention I discovered that the scope is out of collimation by about 4.5�. Can this misalignement account for the observing errors? In your opinion, how much a scope being out of collimation can add to observing errors? Federico
