Gary,
That A-7 bubble octant that you have is perfect (perhaps the best) for observing through commercial aircraft windows. It is reasonably compact with adjustable forward prisms to place right up to the port. If there is some way to remove the radium it would save the alarms at check in. Other passengers will think it is an antique movie camera. A padded camera bag may be a better way to travel with it.
